What We Do

We provide the following services: Energy Audits; Energy Saving Services; Alternative Energy Systems; Coaching; and Green Building Invention/Innovation.

Energy Audits are provided for both residential and commercial buildings.

A number of companies will offer this service, but the question is, do they fully understand what it takes to identify a building’s weaknesses? Dennis Crook, our founder, became highly skilled at understanding building construction at a very early age. He inherited a curiosity from his father (a Maytag Engineer) regarding why things worked or did not work, and a keen interest in analyzing how these projects had the real potential to be upgraded and advanced to the point of longevity and comfort for the family.

Dennis saw it as a teenager in his first construction job, and many times since then. He observed the careless habits of the workers, and the lack of focus of the supervisors, because of their haste to complete the job and the pressure they had from their bosses to finish quickly so that additional false profit could be made. Dennis witnessed the final stages of some projects that included no follow up of work that was promised, lack of attention to detail regarding sealing the house properly or improperly placing insulation, or forgetting to include insulation altogether. These seemingly small mistakes eventually would cost the owners thousands of dollars each in heating and cooling costs and future repairs.

Based on a lifetime of hands on construction, observation, academic rigor, and experience with the green building industry, Dennis has obtained a complete understanding of how heat transfers and air flows through a structure. He has compiled an arsenal of data that enables him to look and see what has been done and what needs to be done, so that 90% of the problems show themselves merely through carefully checking throughout the structure. He does have Building Performance Institute (BPI) and blower door test certifications as an Envelope and Building Analyst Professional as a tool designed to reveal hard to identify problem areas.

Energy Saving Services for residential and commercial remediation.

First and foremost these services are about improving the building envelope. The reason for this is to make sure that the energy used is not “heating or cooling the whole neighborhood” because of leaks from walls, ceilings, floors, basements, windows and doors. If and only if this is accomplished will the Energy Efficient Homes Team/EcoBuilt Efficient Buildings team prepare the site for the installation of alternative energy sources (geothermal or solar PV). With the demand of the building reduced, these other energy sources can efficiently provide comfortable alternative energies for both residential and commercial buildings. The result of installing alternative energy equipment before reducing the building’s demand is as illogical as “putting the cart before the horse”. The buyer will have costly equipment that is over or underperforming, causing damage to your building, discomfort to the occupants, and doing the opposite of what you had hoped.

A word of caution regarding installation of alternative energy equipment: some installers have specific contracts with certain alternative energy equipment companies. This equipment may not be specifically designed for the demands of your building. Buyer beware, the installation of ill fitting equipment could result in an area that is too cold or too hot, and will have a potential for too much humidity and mold as a result.

Please note that our services in this area are exceptional in that we custom fit the alternative energy equipment to the building at hand. All houses and commercial buildings have their own unique structures and, therefore, we are careful to insure a good fit and better performance from the client’s chosen energy source. We prefer to install and custom fit buildings with equipment that is specified for the particular needs of those structures. That is why we can guarantee that our systems will work and we will adjust the equipment to your needs.

Coaching regarding new home purchases and energy efficient installations.

If you are ready to buy a house, our consultant will walk you through the steps that will educate you regarding the energy efficiency of your potential new home. We can also educate you about energy efficiency before you start looking for a home, or before you select a contractor to work on your present home. Our team can teach you how to read the areas of blueprints that indicate a home’s efficiency potential, and compare and contrast aspects of energy efficient homes and/or contractor capabilities.

We decided to offer this service because of the inconsistency of information that is transmitted to the public, and especially the consumer, regarding what energy efficiency is, and frankly the misinformation that is presented to the community that smacks of marketing double speak. In our 25+ years’ of experience, we have been in contact with too many individuals, including some professionals in the very business of which we are speaking, that have been lured into and convinced of the “band aid” money saving approach to making their home energy efficient.

The purpose of this service is to guide and educate the consumer, so that he/she can make an informed decision. This is not a marketing tool. It is a tool that is designed to enhance the capabilities of our clients to make informed decisions about what can be the largest investment of their lifetime.

Green Building Invention/Innovation

The Energy Efficient Homes Team/EcoBuilt Efficient Buildings team are continuously innovating to create new materials and building systems that will set in motion the future of green building and drive the market for green building standards and acquisition.
